The person behind Banyan

 Banyan began with a simple question:

What kind of space helps people understand themselves, find their place and live more fully?

I'm Lavanya R T— a mental health professionial, educator, career guidance professional and lifelong creative.

My work has never stayed neatly within one discipline.

I've worked with children and young people, supported families and educators, taught psychology and business, guided students through questions of education and career, and worked in media, storytelling, communication and creative expression.

I've also spent years making things with my hands — exploring design, jewellery, textiles, objects, traditions and the many ways creativity becomes part of everyday life.

At first glance, these might seem like very different paths.

To me, they have always been connected by the same curiosity:

How do people become who they are?

What shapes us?
What helps us grow?
What makes us feel that we belong?
What happens when we are given the space to explore?

Banyan grew from these questions.

I wanted to create something that could hold all these threads without forcing them into separate boxes — where psychology could meet creativity, education could meet culture, and personal growth could exist alongside community, making and everyday life.

The banyan tree became the natural metaphor.

Deeply rooted, constantly growing, generous in its shade and expansive through connection.

Banyan is my attempt to create that kind of space.

Not a finished destination, but something living — shaped by the people who enter it, the ideas they bring, the things they make and the conversations that happen along the way.

I don't think we ever really finish becoming.

We keep learning.
We keep changing.
We return to old questions with new eyes.
We discover parts of ourselves we didn't know were there.

Banyan is a space for all of it.
